ชาติภูมิ​

หลวงตา ถือกำเนิดในครอบครัวชาวนาแห่งสกุล “โลหิตดี” ณ ตำบลบ้านตาด อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดอุดรธานี เมื่อวันอังคารที่ ๑๒ สิงหาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๕๖ ตรงกับวันขึ้น ๑๑ ค่ำ เดือน ๙ ปีฉลู บิดาชื่อ “นายทองดี” มารดาชื่อ “นางแพง” ได้ให้มงคลนามว่า “บัว”

วัยเด็ก​

​

ขณะ ที่แม่ตั้งครรภ์นั้น ได้ปรารภขึ้นในครอบครัวและหมู่ญาติว่า “ธรรมดาทารกในครรภ์ เมื่อเติบใหญ่ขึ้นมา ต้องดิ้นบ้างไม่มากก็น้อยพอให้แม่รู้สึก แต่กับลูกคนนี้แปลกกว่าคนอื่น ตรงที่นอนนิ่งเงียบเหมือนไม่มีลมหายใจ จนบ่อยครั้งทำให้แม่คิดตกอกตกใจว่า “ไม่ใช่ตายไปแล้วหรือ? ทำไมจึงเงียบผิดปกตินัก” ครั้นเวลาจะดิ้น ก็ดิ้นผิดทารกทั่วๆไป คือดิ้นเสียจนแม่เจ็บในท้อง ครั้นพอถึงระยะจะคลอด ก็ เจ็บท้องอยู่ถึง ๓ วัน ก็ไม่เห็นว่าจะคลอดแต่อย่างใด ตอนเจ็บท้องอยู่นั้น ก็ชนิดจะเอาให้ล้มตายไปเลย เสร็จแล้วก็หายเงียบไป จนกระทั่งคิดว่า ไม่ใช่ตายไปอีกแล้วหรือ? แล้วก็กลับดิ้นขึ้นมาอีก...”
คุณตาของท่านทายถึงอุปนิสัยของทารกในครรภ์ว่า “ถ้าหากเป็นชาย ชอบไปทางไหน เรียกว่า ขาดเลยทีเดียว เป็นคนจิตใจหนักแน่น ลงได้ทำอะไรแล้ว ต้องจริงทุกอย่าง ไม่มีเหลาะๆแหละๆ” เมื่อทารกคลอดออกมา มีสายรกพาดเฉวียงบ่าออกมาด้วย คุณตาเห็นดังนั้น จึงพูดขึ้นว่า “สายบาตรๆ” แล้วทำนายไว้เป็น ๓ อย่าง คือ
๑. สายบาตร ถ้าเป็นนักปราชญ์จะเหยียบแผ่นดินสะเทือน
๒. สายกำยำ ถ้าเป็นนายพราน ก็จะมีความชำนาญลือลั่นสะท้านป่า
๓. สายโซ่ ถ้าเป็นโจร ก็เป็นประเภทคุกตารางแตก

การศึกษา​

​

ท่าน เป็นเด็กที่เรียนหนังสือเก่ง มีความขยัน อดทน และ มีความรับผิดชอบสูง จะเห็นได้จากผลการเรียนอันดีเยี่ยม โดยสอบได้ที่สองในชั้นประถมปีที่ ๑ พอขึ้นชั้นประถมปีที่ ๒, ที่ ๓ ก็สอบได้ที่หนึ่งมาโดยตลอด เมื่อเรียนจบชั้นประถมปีที่ ๓ ซึ่งเป็นการศึกษาภาคบังคับสูงสุดในสมัยนั้นแล้ว ท่านก็ไม่ได้เรียนต่อในชั้นใดอีกเลย

อุปนิสัย​

​

ท่านมีอุปนิสัยถือความสัตย์ความจริง ทำอะไรก็ทำจริง เวลาทำการทำงานจะไม่อยากให้คนรู้คนเห็น แม้ในยามบวชเป็นพระแล้ว เวลาทำความเพียร ท่านไม่ยอมให้ใครเห็นได้ง่ายๆ ทำทางจงกรมหลบอยู่ในป่า และในยามค่ำคืนต้องรอจนหมู่คณะขึ้นกุฏิหมดแล้ว ท่านจึงจะลงเดินจงกรม และที่เด่นมาก ก็คือ มีความทรหดอดทนเป็นเลิศ สังเกตได้จากการทำงานของท่าน จะทำไปเรื่อยๆจนเสร็จงาน ถ้า ไม่มืด หรือไม่ใช่เวลากินข้าวกลางวัน ก็ไม่ยอมเลิก จนพวกน้องๆพากันมาบ่นให้พ่อแม่ฟังว่า “ถ้าพ่อแม่ไม่ไปทำงานด้วย พี่ชายทำงานไม่ยอมเลิกยอมหยุด ยังกับว่า จะเอาให้น้องๆตายไปข้างหนึ่งเลยทีเดียว”

มูลเหตุแห่งการบวช​

​

เมื่อ ท่านมีอายุครบสมควรจะบวชได้แล้ว พ่อได้ปรารภเรื่องนี้ขึ้น ในขณะที่กำลังรับประทานอาหารว่า มีลูกชายหลายคน แต่ไม่มีลูกคนใดคิดบวชให้ พอให้ได้เห็นผ้าเหลืองก่อนตาย ได้ตายอย่างเป็นสุข หายห่วง ลูกคนอื่นๆพ่อไม่สนใจพอจะอาศัยใคร มีแต่ท่านเท่านั้นที่พอจะอาศัยได้
พ่อชมท่านว่า ลง ได้ทำการทำงานอะไรแล้วพ่อไว้ใจได้ทุกอย่าง พ่อทำยังสู้ไม่ได้ แต่พอพ่อขอให้บวชให้ทีไร ท่านไม่เคยตอบ ไม่เคยพูดเลย เหมือนไม่มีหูไม่มีปาก บทเวลาพ่อตายแล้ว จะไม่มีใครฉุดลากขึ้นมาจากหม้อนรก พ่อพูดว่า ถ้าพ่ออาศัยท่านไม่ได้แล้ว พ่อก็หมดหวัง เพราะลูกชายหลายคน พ่อหวังใจอาศัยท่านเท่านั้น
“พอ พ่อว่าอย่างนั้น น้ำตาพ่อร่วงปุ๊บปับ แม่เอง พอมองไปเห็นพ่อน้ำตาร่วง แม่ก็เลยน้ำตาร่วงเข้าอีกคน เราเห็นอย่างนั้น เกิดอาการสะเทือนใจทนดูอยู่ไม่ได้ ก็โดดออกจากวงรับประทานอาหาร ปุ๊บปับหนีไปเลย นั่นแหละ เป็นต้นเหตุให้เราตัดสินใจบวช...”

สู่ร่มกาสาวพัสตร์​

ท่านได้บรรพชาอุปสมบทเป็นพระภิกษุ ณ วัดโยธานิมิตร บ้านหนองขอนกว้าง ตำบลหนองบัว อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดอุดรธานี เมื่อวันอังคารที่ ๑๒ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.๒๔๗๗ ตรงกับวันขึ้น ๙ ค่ำ เดือน ๗ ปีจอ พระ อุปัชฌาย์คือ ท่านเจ้าคุณพระธรรมเจดีย์ (จูม พนฺธุโล) วัดโพธิสมภรณ์ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดอุดรธานี ได้ให้ฉายานามว่า “ญาณสมฺปนฺโน” แปลว่า “ผู้ถึงพร้อมด้วยญาณ”
ด้วยความที่เป็นคนมีอุปนิสัยจริงจัง คิดว่า “พอ บวชแล้ว เราจะตั้งหน้าบวชให้สมบูรณ์แบบ ไม่ให้ตำหนิติเตียนเจ้าของได้ในหลักธรรมหลักวินัยข้อใดเลย เราจะเอาจริงเอาจังจนกระทั่งวันสึก กะไว้อย่างนาน ๒ ปี จะทำหน้าที่บวชให้สมบูรณ์ที่สุด จะเรียนหนังสืออะไรๆก็แล้วแต่เถอะ จะทำหน้าที่ให้สมบูรณ์”

แม้เรียนปริยัติ ก็ไม่ทิ้งเรื่องภาวนา​

ท่านได้ไปถามคำภาวนาจากท่านพระครู “กระผมอยากภาวนา จะให้ภาวนายังไง?” “เออ! ให้ภาวนา พุทโธ นะ เราก็ภาวนา พุทโธ เหมือนกัน ท่าน ได้ฝึกหัดภาวนาอย่างไม่ลดละ แรกๆจิตใจก็ไม่สงบเท่าใดนัก แต่เมื่อทำอยู่หลายครั้งหลายหน จิตก็เริ่มสงบตัวลงไปโดยลำดับ จนกระทั่งเห็นความอัศจรรย์ของจิต
“เมื่อ เรียนธรรมะไปตรงไหน มันสะดุดใจเข้าไปเรื่อยๆ นับตั้งแต่ นวโกวาท ที่เป็นพื้นฐานแห่งการศึกษาเบื้องต้น ยิ่งได้อ่านพุทธประวัติ ทำให้เกิดความสลดสังเวช สงสารพระพุทธองค์ ในเวลาที่ทรงลำบาก เพราะทรมานพระองค์เองก่อนตรัสรู้ธรรม จนถึงกับน้ำตา ร่วงไปเรื่อยๆ พออ่านจบ เกิดความสลดใจอย่างยิ่ง ในความพากเพียรของพระองค์ซึ่งเป็นกษัตริย์ทั้งองค์ ทรงสละราชสมบัติออกทรงผนวช เป็นคนขอทานล้วนๆ ซึ่งสมัยนั้นไม่มีศาสนา คำว่าการให้ทานได้บุญอย่างนั้น การรักษาศีลได้บุญอย่างนี้ ไม่เคยมี พระองค์ ก็ต้องเป็นคนอนาถา และขอทานเขามาโดยตรง และฝึกอบรมพระองค์เต็มพระสติกำลังทุกวิถีทาง เป็นเวลา ๖ ปี ถึงได้ตรัสรู้เป็นพระพุทธเจ้าขึ้นมา
ใน ขณะที่อ่านประวัติของพระพุทธเจ้าที่ได้ตรัสรู้ธรรม รู้สึกอัศจรรย์อย่างยิ่ง ถึงกับน้ำตาร่วงเช่นเดียวกัน เมื่อได้อ่านประวัติของพระสาวกอรหันต์ทั้งหลาย ที่ท่านออกมาจากสกุลต่างๆกัน ตั้งแต่พระราชามหากษัตริย์ มหาเศรษฐี กุฎุมพี พ่อค้า ประชาชน ตลอดคนธรรมดา ท่านกล่าวว่า
“...องค์ ไหนออกมาจากสกุลใด หลังจากได้รับพระโอวาทจากพระพุทธเจ้าแล้ว ต่างก็ไปบำเพ็ญในป่าในเขาอย่างเอาจริงเอาจัง เดี๋ยวองค์นั้นสำเร็จเป็นพระอรหันต์อยู่ที่นั่น องค์นั้นสำเร็จอยู่ในป่านั้น ในเขาลูกนั้น ในถ้ำนั้น ในทำเลนี้มีแต่ที่สงบสงัด ก็เกิดความเชื่อเลื่อมใสขึ้นมา ทำให้ใจหมุนติ้ว เรื่องภายนอกก็ค่อยจืดไปจางไป...”
“...ทีแรกก็คิดจะไปสวรรค์ ไปพรหมโลก พออ่านประวัติพระสาวกมากๆเข้า มัน ไม่อยากไปล่ะสิ อยากไปนิพพาน สุดท้ายก็อยากไปแต่นิพพานอย่างเดียว อยากเป็นพระอรหันต์อย่างเดียวเท่านั้น ไม่มีเปอร์เซ็นต์อื่นเข้ามาเจือปนเลย ทีนี้จิตมันก็พุ่งลงตรงนั้น ลงช่องเดียว ความตั้งใจเดิมว่าจะบวชเพียง ๒ พรรษา แล้วละสิกขาลาเพศไปนั้น ค่อยจืดจางลงไปทุกขณะ กลับเพิ่มพูนความยินดีในเพศนักบวชมากเข้าไปทุกที เรื่องธรรมะก็รู้สึกดูดดื่มยิ่งขึ้นเรื่อยๆ จิตใจก็เปลี่ยนแปลงไป...”
ด้วยเหตุนี้เอง ในระยะต่อมาท่านจึงได้ออกจากบ้านตาด ไปศึกษาเล่าเรียนในที่ต่างๆ จน กระทั่งได้ตั้งสัจจอธิษฐานไว้เลยว่า “เมื่อจบเปรียญ ๓ ประโยคแล้ว จะออกปฏิบัติโดยถ่ายเดียวเท่านั้น ไม่มีข้อแม้ ไม่มีเงื่อนไข เพราะอยากพ้นทุกข์เหลือกำลัง อยากเป็นพระอรหันต์นั่นเอง”
แต่ ถึงกระนั้น ก็ยังอดสงสัยไม่ได้ว่า “เวลานี้มรรคผลนิพพาน จะมีอยู่เหมือนครั้งพุทธกาลหรือไม่?” ท่านได้เก็บความสงสัยนี้ฝังอยู่ภายในใจ เพราะไม่สามารถจะระบายให้ผู้ใดฟังได้ เป็นเหตุให้ท่านมุ่งหวังอยากพบ ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น ภูริทัตโต ซึ่งท่านเคยได้ยินชื่อเสียงมานาน และเชื่อมั่นอยู่ภายในใจลึกๆว่า ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น จะสามารถแก้ข้อสงสัยนี้ได้
ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๔ ท่านเรียนจบปริยัติที่วัดเจดีย์หลวง นับได้ ๗ พรรษาพอดี โดยสอบได้ทั้งนักธรรมเอก และเปรียญ ๓ ประโยค ในปีเดียวกัน ท่านเล่าว่า “ในช่วงเรียนปริยัติ อยู่ ๗ ปี การปฏิบัติไม่ค่อยเต็มที่เท่าใดนัก เป็นเพียงสงบเล็กๆน้อยๆธรรมดาๆ มีเพียง ๓ หน ที่จิตลงถึงขนาดอัศจรรย์เต็มที่ คือ ลง กึ๊ก เต็มที่แล้วอารมณ์อะไรขาดหมดในเวลานั้น เหลือแต่รู้อันเดียว กายก็หายเงียบเลย..”
ครั้นเมื่อเรียนจบแล้ว ท่าน ระลึกถึงคำสัตย์ที่ตั้งไว้แต่ต้น จึงเดินทางเข้ากรุงเทพฯ เพื่อหาโอกาสกราบลาพระเถระผู้ใหญ่ อาจารย์ของท่าน พอดีท่านรับนิมนต์ไปต่างจังหวัด จึงถือโอกาสนั้นเข้านมัสการกราบลาสมเด็จพระมหาวีรวงศ์ (ติสโส อ้วน) ซึ่งเป็นเจ้าอาวาสวัดบรมนิวาสในขณะนั้น ท่านก็ยินดีอนุญาตให้ไปได้

ออกปฏิบัติเต็มตัว เป็นตายฝากไว้กับธรรม​

​

ท่านออก เดินทางมุ่งสู่จังหวัดนครราชสีมา โดยพกหนังสือปาฏิโมกข์เพียงเล่มเดียวติดย่ามไปเท่านั้น และเข้าจำพรรษาที่วัดในอำเภอจักราช เป็นปีพรรษาที่ ๘ ท่านเร่งทำความเพียรทั้งวันทั้งคืน ตั้งแต่มาถึงทีแรกจนตลอดพรรษา
“คราว นี้จะเอาให้เต็มเม็ดเต็มหน่วย เต็มเหตุเต็มผล เอาเป็นเอาตายเข้าว่าเลย อย่างอื่นไม่หวังทั้งหมด หวังความพ้นทุกข์อย่างเดียวเท่านั้น จะให้พ้นทุกข์ในชาตินี้แน่นอน ขอแต่เพียงท่านผู้หนึ่งผู้ใด ได้ชี้แจงให้เราทราบ เรื่องมรรคผลนิพพาน ว่า มีอยู่จริงเท่านั้น เราจะมอบกายถวายชีวิตต่อท่านผู้นั้น และมอบกายถวายชีวิตต่ออรรถต่อธรรม ด้วยข้อปฏิบัติอย่างไม่ให้อะไรเหลือหลอเลย ตายก็ตายไปกับข้อปฏิบัติ ไม่ได้ตายด้วยความถอยหลัง จิตปักลงเหมือนหินหัก”
ท่านออกเดินทางจากจังหวัดนครราชสีมา มุ่งหน้าไปจังหวัดอุดรธานี ตั้งใจว่าจะไปจำพรรษากับท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น ที่วัดป่าโนนนิเวศน์ แต่ก็ไม่ทันท่าน เพราะท่านรับนิมนต์ไปจังหวัดสกลนครเสียก่อน ท่านจึงไปพักที่วัดทุ่งสว่าง จังหวัดหนองคาย พอดีมีพระมาจากวัดบ้านโคกนามน เล่าให้ฟังว่า “ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นดุมาก ไม่เพียงแต่ดุเท่านั้น พอไล่ได้ ก็ไล่หนีเลย”
ท่าน ฟังแล้วรู้สึกถึงจิตถึงใจกับความเด็ดของท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น และแอบคิดอยู่แต่ผู้เดียวในใจว่า “...อาจารย์องค์นี้ล่ะ จะเป็นอาจารย์ของเรา ต้องให้เราไปเห็นเอง ท่านจะดุแบบไหน ครูบาอาจารย์ชื่อเสียงโด่งดังทั่วประเทศไทยมานานขนาดนี้ จะดุด่าขับไล่ไสส่งโดยหาเหตุผลไม่ได้นี้ เป็นไปไม่ได้...”

พบท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น​

​

ท่านพักอยู่ที่วัดทุ่งสว่าง ประมาณ ๓ เดือน พอ ถึงเดือนพฤษภาคม ๒๔๘๕ เป็นพรรษาที่ ๙ ของท่าน ก็ออกเดินทางจากหนองคาย ไปสกลนคร เพื่อมุ่งสู่ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น ซึ่งพักอยุ่ที่บ้านโคก ตำบลตองโขบ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดสกลนคร
ถาม ทางชาวบ้านเดินลัดเลาะไปตามทางด่าน ถึงวัดพอดีมืดค่ำ ก็ไปเห็นศาลาหลังหนึ่ง เกิดสงสัยขึ้น “ถ้าเป็นศาลา มันก็ดูว่าเล็กไป ถ้าว่าเป็นกุฏิ ก็จะใหญ่ไป” พอ ดีท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น กำลังเดินจงกรมอยู่ที่ข้างศาลา ท่านก็เดินไปพบท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นบนทางจงกรม ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นจึงถามขึ้นว่า “ใครมานี่?” ท่านกราบเรียนว่า “ผมครับ” ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นก็กล่าวขึ้นอย่างดุๆ พร้อมกับใส่ปัญหาให้คิดในทันทีว่า “...อันผมๆนี้ ตั้งแต่คนหัวล้านมันก็มีผม ตรงที่มันไม่ล้าน...” พอได้ยินดังนั้น ท่านรู้สึกว่า พลาดไปอย่างถนัดใจ จึงกราบเรียนขึ้นใหม่ทันทีว่า “ผม ชื่อ พระมหาบัวครับ” “เออ! ก็ว่าอย่างนั้นสิ มันถึงจะรู้เรื่องกัน อันนี้ว่า ผม ผม ใครมันก็มี ผมเต็มหัว ทุกคน”
พอ ได้โอกาสจึงได้เข้ากราบเรียนถวายตัวเป็นศิษย์ และเรียนให้ท่านทราบถึงที่มาที่ไปพอท่านได้รู้จัก พอกราบเรียนเสร็จ ก็ครุ่นคิดวิตกกังวลอยู่ภายในใจ “ไม่อยากได้ยินเลย คำที่ว่า ที่นี่เต็มแล้ว รับไม่ได้แล้ว กลัวว่าหัวอกจะแตก...” สักครู่หนึ่ง ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นก็พูดว่า “นี่ พอดีนะนี่ เมื่อวานนี้ท่านเนตรไปจากนี้ แล้ววันนี้ท่านมหาก็มา ไม่เช่นนั้นก็ไม่ได้อยู่ กุฏิไม่ว่าง” ท่านพระ อาจารย์มั่นพูดธรรมดาๆ ถึงจะเมตตารับท่านไว้แล้วก็ตาม แต่ก็ทำให้ท่านรู้สึกหวาดเสียวอดใจหายใจคว่ำไม่ได้ เพราะเกรงว่าจะไม่ได้อยู่

สิ้นกังขาใน มรรค ผล นิพพาน​

​

ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น พูดเหมือนจะล่วงรู้วาระจิตของท่าน จึงพูดจี้เอาตรงๆในคืนแรกนี้เลยว่า
“...ท่าน มาหามรรคผลนิพพาน มรรคผลนิพพานอยู่ที่ไหน? ดินเป็นดิน น้ำเป็นน้ำ ลมเป็นลม ไฟเป็นไฟ ฟ้าอากาศเป็นฟ้าอากาศ แร่ธาตุต่างๆเป็นของเขาเอง เขาไม่ได้เป็นมรรคผลนิพพาน เขาไม่ได้เป็นกิเลส”
“กิเลส จริงๆ มรรคผลนิพพานจริงๆอยู่ที่หัวใจ ขอให้ท่านกำหนดจิตจ่อด้วยสติที่หัวใจ ท่านจะเห็นความเคลื่อนไหวของทั้งธรรม ของทั้งกิเลสอยู่ภายในใจ แล้วขณะเดียวกัน ท่านจะเห็นมรรคผลนิพพานไปโดยลำดับลำดา...”
ท่านพระ อาจารย์มั่น แสดงเรื่องมรรคผลนิพพาน ชนิดที่ถอดออกมาจากใจท่านแท้ๆ ทำให้ท่านเกิดความมั่นใจ และเชื่อแน่ว่า มรรคผลนิพพานมีอยู่จริง ความสงสัยในเรื่องนี้ที่เคยค้างคามาแต่เดิมก็หมดสิ้นไป

ทุกข์เพราะจิตเสื่อม​

​

เพราะเหตุทำกลด ทำให้สมาธิของท่านเริ่มเสื่อมลง “...เป็น สภาวะที่จิตรู้สึกเข้าสมาธิไม่ค่อยสนิทเหมือนที่เคยเป็นมา บางครั้งเข้าสงบได้ แต่บางครั้งเข้าไม่ได้ ภาวะเสื่อมนี้ มันถึงขนาดจะเป็นจะตายจริงๆ เพราะทุกข์มาก เหตุที่ทุกข์มาก เพราะได้เคยเห็นคุณค่าของสมาธิที่แน่นปึ๋งมาแล้ว และก็กลับเสื่อมเอาชนิดไม่มีอะไรติดเนื้อติดตัวเลย มีแต่ฟืนแต่ไฟเผาหัวใจตลอดเวลา ทั้งวันทั้งคืน ทั้งยืนทั้งเดิน ทั้งนั่งทั้งนอน จึงเป็นทุกข์ เพราะอยากได้สมาธินั้นกลับมา ก็เป็นมหันตทุกข์จริงๆ”
แต่ด้วยความเด็ดเดี่ยว ความมุ่งมั่นจริงจัง เพื่อที่จะครองชัยชนะในการต่อสู้กับกิเลสนี้ให้ได้ ท่านพูดเสมอว่า “ถ้า กิเลสไม่ตาย เราก็ต้องตายเท่านั้น จะให้อยู่เป็นสอง ระหว่างกิเลสกับเรานั้น ไม่ได้” ท่านได้รับอุบายจากท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นในตอนจิตเสื่อมว่า “ จงปล่อยความคิดถึงมันเสีย แล้วให้คิดถึงพุทโธติดๆกันอย่าลดละ พอบริกรรมพุทโธ ถี่ยิบติดๆกันเข้า มันวิ่งกลับมาเอง คราวนี้แม้มันกลับมาก็อย่าปล่อยพุทโธ มันไม่มีอาหารกิน เดี๋ยวมันก็วิ่งกลับมาหาเรา”
พรรษาที่ ๙ เป็นพรรษาแรกที่ท่านได้จำพรรษากับท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น ณ บ้านโคก จังหวัดสกลนคร ท่านตั้งคำมั่นสัญญาขึ้นว่า “...อย่าง ไรจะต้องนำคำบริกรรมพุทโธ มากำกับจิตตลอดเวลา ไม่ว่าเข้าสมาธิ ออกสมาธิ ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ที่ไหน แม้ที่สุดปัดกวาดลานวัด หรือทำกิจวัตรต่างๆ จะไม่ยอมให้สติพลั้งเผลอจากคำบริกรรมนั้นเลย...” ด้วยความมุ่งมั่นจริงจัง จิตก็เป็นสมาธิ ไม่เสื่อมอีกต่อไป

โหมเร่งความเพียรเต็มกำลัง นั่งสมาธิตลอดรุ่ง​

​

พรรษา ที่ ๑๐ จำพรรษาที่บ้านนามน จังหวัดสกลนคร เป็นปีที่ ๒ ของการไปอยู่กับท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น ในพรรษานี้ท่านเร่งความเพียรอย่างเต็มเหนี่ยวยิ่งกว่าธรรมดา หักโหมทั้งร่างกายและจิตใจ กลางวันไม่นอนเลย เว้นแต่วันที่นั่งสมาธิตลอดรุ่ง วันนั้นจึงจะยอมให้พักกลางวัน ถ้าวันไหนทำความเพียรธรรมดาๆ กลางวันท่านจะไม่ยอมพักเลย ในคืนที่นั่งสมาธิตลอดรุ่งนั้น ท่านจะไม่ยอมให้พลิกเปลี่ยน หรือขยับแข้งขาใดๆ ความทุกข์ทรมานที่ปรากฏนั้น ท่านเล่าว่า
“...เหมือน กับก้นมันพองไปหมด กระดูกเหมือนจะแตกทุกข้อทุกท่อน กระดูกมันต่อกันตรงไหน หรือแม้แต่ข้อมือเหมือนมันจะขาดจากกัน ทุกขเวทนาความเจ็บปวดเวลาขึ้น มันขึ้นหมดทุกอย่างทุกแง่ทุกมุมในร่างกายเลย...”
การ โหมความเพียรหลายต่อหลายครั้ง นั่งสมาธิตลอดรุ่ง ๙ คืน ๑๐ คืน เช่นนี้ ทำให้ก้นของท่านถึงกับพอง และแตกเลอะเปื้อนใส่สบงเลยทีเดียว แต่ท่านได้เห็นความอัศจรรย์ของจิต ก็ตอนต่อสู้กับเวทนาจากการนั่งตลอดรุ่งนี่เอง ดังนั้น ท่านที่สามารถพิจารณาทุกขเวทนาจนถึงความจริงของกาย ของเวทนา ของจิตได้ ย่อมเห็นธรรมอย่างประจักษ์ใจ

ติดสมาธิอยู่ ๕ ปี​

​

ใน ระยะนั้น สมาธิของท่านมีความแน่นหนามั่นคงมาก ถึงขนาดที่ว่า จะให้แน่วอยู่ในสมาธิสักกี่ชั่วโมงก็ได้ และเป็นความสุขอย่างยิ่ง ไม่อยากจะออกยุ่งกับอะไร มีความพอใจกับการที่จิตหยั่งลงสู่ความรู้อันเดียวแน่วแน่อยู่อย่างนั้น สุดท้ายก็นึกว่า ความรู้เด่นๆนี่เองจะเป็นนิพพาน ท่านติดสุขในสมาธิอยู่เช่นนี้ ถึง ๕ ปีเต็ม จนท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น ต้องใช้อุบายฉุดลากออกมา “ท่านจะนอนตายอยู่นั่นหรือ? ท่านรู้ไหม? สุขในสมาธิเหมือนเนื้อติดฟัน ท่านรู้ไหม? สมาธิของพระพุทธเจ้า สมาธิต้องรู้สมาธิ ปัญญาต้องรู้ปัญญา อันนี้มันเอาสมาธิเป็นนิพพานเลย มันบ้าสมาธินี่ สมาธินอนตายอยู่นี่หรือ? เป็นสัมมาสมาธิน่ะ”

เพลินทางด้านปัญญา​

พอออกจากสมาธิด้วยอำนาจธรรมอันเผ็ดร้อนของท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นเข่นเอาอย่างหนัก ก็ พิจารณาทางด้านปัญญาอย่างรวดเร็ว หมุนติ้วทั้งกลางวันกลางคืนไม่ได้หลับได้นอน ก็มาตำหนิสมาธิ ว่านอนตายอยู่เปล่าๆไม่ได้เรื่องได้ราวอะไร อันที่จริง ถ้าพอดี สมาธิก็เป็นเครื่องพักจิต เป็นเหมือนหินลับปัญญาให้แหลมคม ท่านพระอาจารย์มั่นจึงเข่นเอาอีกว่า “ นั่นละ มันบ้าสังขาร บ้าหลงสังขาร” เพราะใช้สังขารจนเลยเถิดเกินประมาณ สังขารก็กลายเป็นสมุทัย หากใช้ให้พอเหมาะพอดี สังขารจึงเป็นมรรคฆ่ากิเลส

พิจารณาผ่านกามราคะ​

ท่าน พิจารณาด้านอสุภะ มองดูคนมีแต่หนังห่อกระดูก มีแต่เนื้อแต่หนังแดงโร่ไปหมด ราคะนี้ไม่ปรากฏเลย ค่อยหมดไปๆ โดยไม่บอกกาล บอกเวลา บอกสถานที่ ว่าหมดไปขณะนั้น เวลานั้น ท่านจึงต้องพลิกเอาสุภะ เดินจงกรมเอารูปสวยๆงามๆเข้ามาบังคับติดแนบกับตัวเอง ท่านเอาวิธีการนี้มาปฏิบัติได้ ๔ วันเต็มๆ พอคืนที่ ๔ สัก ๓-๔ ทุ่มล่วงไปแล้ว มันมีลักษณะยุบยับภายในจิต เหมือนจะกำหนัดในรูปสวยๆงามๆ นั่น แสดงว่ายังไม่สิ้น จากนั้น ก็นั่งกำหนดอสุภะไว้ตรงหน้า ตั้งให้คงที่อยู่อย่างนั้น แล้วจิตเพ่งดูด้วยความมีสติจดจ่อ ดูว่า กองอสุภะนี้จะเคลื่อนที่หรือเปลี่ยนตัวไปไหนมาไหน พอกำหนดเข้าไป อสุภะที่ตั้งอยู่ตรงหน้านั้น มันถูกจิตกลืนเข้ามา อมเข้ามาหาจิต สุดท้ายเลยรู้เห็นว่า เป็นจิตเสียเองเป็นตัวอสุภะนั้นน่ะ จิต ตัวไปกำหนดว่าอสุภะนั้นน่ะ มันกลืนเข้ามาๆ เลยมาที่จิตเสียเองไปเป็น สุภะ และ อสุภะ หลอกตัวเอง จิตก็ปล่อยผลัวะทันที ปล่อยอสุภะ ข้างนอกว่า เข้าใจแล้วทีนี้ เพราะมันขาดจากกัน มันต้องอย่างนี้สิ

มหาสติมหาปัญญา​

ตอน ที่จิตว่างเต็มที่ ความรู้อันนี้จะเด่นเต็มที่ คือ รูป เวทนา สัญญา สังขาร วิญญาณ มันรู้รอบหมดแล้ว มันปล่อยของมันหมดไม่มีอะไรเหลือ เหลือ แต่ความรู้นี้อย่างเดียว มันมีความปฏิพัทธ์อ้อยอิ่งอยู่อย่างละเอียดสุขุม มันมีความดูดดื่มอยู่กับความรู้อันนี้อย่างเดียว พออาการใดๆเกิดขึ้นพั๊บ มันก็ดับพร้อม ถ้าครั้งพุทธกาล เรียกว่า มหาสติมหาปัญญา แต่สมัยทุกวันนี้ เรียกว่า สติปัญญาอัตโนมัติก็เหมาะสมกันแล้ว จิตดวงนี้ถึงได้เด่น และสว่างไปหมด ท่านนำเรื่องนี้ไปเล่าถวายท่านพระอาจารย์มั่น ท่านก็พูดอย่างขึงขังตึงตังว่า “เอ้อ! ถูกต้องแล้ว ได้หลักได้เกณฑ์แล้ว อย่างนี้ละ... ผมเป็นที่ถ้ำสาริกา เป็นอย่างท่านมหานี่ละ เอาเลยได้การ”

ดับอวิชชาทำลายกรงขังแห่งวัฏฏะ​

พรรษา ที่ ๑๖ เป็นปีที่ ๙ แห่งการออกปฏิบัติ ณ วัดดอยธรรมเจดีย์ วันจันทร์ที่ ๑๕ พฤษภาคม ๒๔๙๓ คืนเดือนดับ แรม ๑๔ ค่ำ เดือน ๖ เวลา ๕ ทุ่มตรง เป็นคืนแห่งความสำเร็จระหว่างกิเลสกับธรรมภายในใจตัดสินกันลงได้ ท่านได้เมตตาเล่าขณะจิตตอนนั้นว่า
พอ สติปัญญาเริ่มหันความสนใจเข้ามาพิจารณาจิตดวงนี้ ความรู้ชนิดหนึ่งที่ไม่คาดไม่ฝันก็ผุดขึ้นมาภายในใจว่า “ความเศร้าหมองก็ดี ความผ่องใสก็ดี ความสุขก็ดี ความทุกข์ก็ดี เหล่านี้เป็นสมมุติทั้งสิ้น และเป็นอนัตตาทั้งมวลนะ” เท่านั้นแล สติปัญญาก็หยั่งทราบว่า จิตที่ถูกอวิชชาครอบงำอยู่นั้นว่า เป็นสมมุติที่ควรปล่อยวางโดยถ่ายเดียว ไม่ควรยึดถือเอาไว้
หลัง จากความรู้ที่ผุดขึ้นบอกเตือนสติปัญญาผู้ทำหน้าที่ตรวจตราอยู่ขณะนั้นผ่านไป ครู่เดียว จิตและสติปัญญา เป็นราวกับว่า ต่างวางตัวเป็นอุเบกขามัธยัสถ์ ไม่กระเพื่อมตัวทำหน้าที่ใดๆ ในขณะนั้นจิตเป็นกลางๆ ไม่จดจ่อกับอะไร ไม่เผลอส่งใจไปไหน ปัญญาก็ไม่ทำงาน สติก็รู้อยู่ตามธรรมดาของตนไม่จดจ่อกับสิ่งใด ขณะจิต สติ ปัญญา ทั้งสามเป็นอุเบกขามัธยัสถ์นั้นแล เป็นขณะที่โลกธาตุภายในจิต อันมีอวิชชาเป็นผู้เรืองอำนาจ ได้กระเทือนและขาดสะบั้นบรรลัยลงจากบัลลังก์คือใจ กลายเป็นวิสุทธิจิตขึ้นมาแทนที่

ฝึกตนเองดีแล้ว จึงฝึกผู้อื่น ชื่อว่า ทำตามพระพุทธเจ้า​

หลวง ตาพระมหาบัว ญาณสัมปันโน ถือเป็นปูชนียบุคคลที่สำคัญยิ่งในพระพุทธศาสนา เป็นผู้มีคุณูปการต่อชาวไทยอย่างใหญ่หลวง ข้อวัตรปฏิปทาอันหมดจดงดงามย่อมเป็นเนติแบบอย่างที่ดีแก่อนุชนรุ่นหลังได้ เจริญรอยตาม การทำอัตตัตถจริยา คือ การบำเพ็ญประโยชน์ตน ก็ถึงที่สุดแล้ว โดยอยู่จบพรหมจรรย์เสร็จกิจในพระพุทธศาสนาบรรลุคุณธรรมขั้นสูงสุด การทำ ญาตัตถจริยา คือ การสงเคราะห์ญาติมิตร ก็ถึงที่สุดแล้ว โดยเทศนาอบรมพระเณร และโปรดโยมมารดา จนตั้งอยู่ในอริยภูมิ การทำโลกัตถจริยา คือ การบำเพ็ญประโยชน์ต่อโลก ก็ถึงที่สุดแล้ว ด้วยเมตตาธรรมอันเปี่ยมล้นแผ่ไปในเหล่าสรรพสัตว์ ดังเช่น การช่วยเหลือ โรงพยาบาล หน่วยงานราชการ โรงเรียนต่างๆ ผู้ด้อยโอกาส ผู้ประสบทุกข์ภัย การทำนุบำรุงพุทธศาสนา การจัดตั้งเครือข่ายสถานีวิทยุเสียงธรรมเพื่อประชาชน และที่สำคัญยิ่งคือ เทศนาธรรมที่ตรงแน่วต่อมรรคผลนิพพานขององค์หลวงตา ที่ ยังให้ผู้ปฏิบัติตาม ถึงซึ่งธรรมที่พาพ้นจากทุกข์ทั้งมวลได้ ซึ่งเป็นกิจสำคัญของพระพุทธศาสนา เป็นธรรมสมบัติอันล้ำค่าที่ได้มอบไว้แก่ปวงศิษย์และมนุษยชาติ
แม้ ในวาระสุดท้าย ที่ดับขันธ์เข้าสู่พระนิพพาน กระแสแห่งเมตตาธรรมขององค์หลวงตา ยังคงแผ่ซ่านปกคลุมไปทั่วผืนแผ่นดินไทย หลวงตาเคยพูดไว้ “ศพของเราจะเผาด้วยฟืน ส่วนเงินให้เอาไปซื้อทองคำเข้าสู่คลังหลวง” พวกเราเคยได้ยินคำพูดเช่นนี่ที่ไหนบ้าง? ไม่เคยได้ยินใครพูดเช่นนี้มาก่อนเลย แต่หลวงตาซึ่งอยู่ในวัยอันชราภาพมากแล้ว กลับพูดได้อย่างองอาจกล้าหาญ และไม่สะทกสะท้าน
ท่าน เป็นพระมหาเถระที่มีคุณูปการต่อประเทศชาติอย่างใหญ่หลวง มีลูกศิษย์ลูกหาเคารพนับถือมากมาย ใช่แต่เท่านั้น หลวงตา ยังเป็นท่านพ่อ “ของทูลกระหม่อมน้อย” เจ้าฟ้าหญิงจุฬาภรณวลัยลักษณ์ อัครราชกุมารี ดังนั้น หากจะกระทำการใดๆ เพื่อความยิ่งใหญ่แบบโลกๆแล้ว จะให้ยิ่งใหญ่ขนาดไหนก็สามารถทำได้
แต่ มาบัดนี้ สิ่งที่ปรากฏท้าทายต่อสายตาของพวกเราทุกคน กลับเป็นเชิงตะกอนแบบสมถะเรียบง่าย แต่สง่างามและภูมิฐานอยู่ในที จิตกาธานอันเป็นที่ตั้งสรีระสังขารขององค์หลวงตา จะกลายเป็นภาพความงามที่ประทับอยู่ในความทรงจำของปวงศิษย์ทุกคน และตรึงทุกสายตาให้หยุดนิ่ง เมื่อยามได้ประสบพบเห็น
หลวง ตาได้ใช้สรีระสังขารของท่าน หล่อหลอมหัวใจของคนไทยทั้งชาติ ให้เป็นหนึ่งเดียว กลายเป็นทองคำศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ประดิษฐานในคลังหลวง เปล่งรัศมีเหลืองอร่ามงามตระการตา มอบเป็นของขวัญชิ้นสุดท้าย คือ “หัวใจทองคำ” แก่ลูกหลานชาวไทย ให้ช่วยกันปกป้องคุ้มครอง “คลังหลวง” ให้อยู่คู่ชาติไทย ไปตลอดอนันตกาล
บัด นี้ หลวงตาได้ละสังขาร เข้าสู่แดนอมตะมหานฤพาน ลาลับจากพวกเราไป ไปแล้วไปลับไม่หวนคืนกลับ พวกเรามาส่งท่าน ณ จุดสุดท้ายปลายแดน อันเป็นรอยต่อระหว่างสมมุติ กับ วิมุติ เมื่อหวนรำลึกถึงคำกล่าวขององค์หลวงตาที่ว่า

“เวลามีชีวิตอยู่นี้ เราจะทำความดีให้โลกทั้งหลายได้เป็นคติตัวอย่างอันดีงาม ​

และทำด้วยความเมตตาสงสารต่อโลก เพราะหลังจากนี้แล้ว...เราตายแล้ว...​

เราจะไม่กลับมาเกิดในโลกนี้อีกต่อไป เป็นตลอดอนันตกาล”​

นี้...ช่างเป็นคำกล่าวที่องอาจกล้าหาญ ดุจพระยาไกรสรสีหราชผู้เป็นจอมไพร บันลือสีหนาทด้วยอานุภาพอันยิ่งใหญ่ ภิกษุ ผู้เฒ่าในวัยอันชราภาพมากแล้ว ได้ประกาศแสนยานุภาพแห่งพระพุทธศาสนา ดัวยเมตตาธรรมอันบริสุทธิ์ล้ำค่าไม่มีประมาณ ก่อให้เกิดคุณูปการแผ่ไปในเหล่าสรรพสัตว์ เปรียบหยาดน้ำฝนตกจากนภากาศ รดราดผืนพสุธาอันแห้งผาก...ให้ชุ่มฉ่ำเย็น ฉะนั้น
พ่อแม่ครูอาจารย์... องค์หลวงตา...ของปวงศิษย์ทุกคน ผู้เปรียบประดุจ ร่มโพธ์แก้ว ร่มไทรทอง ที่ให้ความร่มเย็นแก่ปวงศิษย์มาช้านาน พลันมาละสังขาร ลาลับจากพวกเราไป ช่างยากเย็นยิ่งนัก ที่จะข่มจิตหักใจ หักห้ามน้ำตามิให้หลั่งไหล ศิษย์ทั้งหลายจะขอปฏิบัติบูชา ตามรอยบาทขององค์หลวงตา เข้าสู่พระนิพพานเมืองแก้วให้จงได้ พ่อ แม่ครูอาจารย์...หลวงตา... ได้ดับขันธ์ปรินิพพานจากไปแล้ว เหลือไว้แต่พระคุณนามอันเพริศแพร้วบรรเจิดจ้า กิตติศัพท์อันงามเฟื่องฟุ้งทั่วไตรโลกา เปล่งรัศมีธรรมงามสง่า ให้โลกนี้ได้ร่ำลือว่า นี่คือ หลวงตาพระมหาบัว ญาณสัมปันโน ผู้เป็นมหาบุรุษรัฐอัศจรรย์ยิ่งใหญ่ ผู้ทรงคุณธรรมอันล้ำเลิศ มีคุณูปการแผ่ไปในไตรโลกธาตุไม่มีผู้ใดเสมอเหมือน ผู้เหยียบแผ่นดินสะท้านสะเทือน...

Short Biography of Luangta Maha Bua Yannasampanno​

Background​

Luangta was born into a farmer’s family with the last name “Lohitdee” in the village of Ban Tad, Amper Munag District, Udorn Thanee Province on Tuesday 12^th August 1913 . This date falls on the 11^th night of the waxing moon 9^th Month , the Year of the Ox. His Father’s name is “Mr Thongdee”, his mother’s name is “Mrs Pang”. His parents gave him the auspicious name “Bua” (which means lotusflower).

Childhood​

When his Mother was pregnant, she mentioned to the family and relatives that “The nature of the baby in the womb as it grows, it will move and this the mother will be able to feel. However, the nature of this child differs from others for it sleeps and stays still, very quiet as if there is no breathing. The Mother often thought and worried why is the baby not moving, why is it so quiet, can it be that the baby is already dead?”. However when the baby did moves, it also moved around more than other babies, it really trashed inside her and his Mother felt very intense pain at the stomach. When the birth drew near, the Mother felt the birth pangs for 3 days but there was no sign of birth. While in such a great pain she thought she is going to die, but then suddenly inside her it became again so quiet that she thought has the baby already died? Then the baby starts wriggleling again...”
His grandfather guessed the character of the baby in the womb like that: “If it is a boy, whatever he desires, he will be very firm about it, with great determination and seriousness about everything he does and not being ambiguent”. When the baby was finally born, the placenta was thrown over his shoulder. When grandfather saw that, he said “ alms-bowl strap” and predicted three things:
1. alms-bowl strap: if he becomes a philosopher, he will shake the earth.
2. robust strap: if he becomes a hunter, his skills will shake the forests.
3. chain strap: if he becomes a thief, there will be no prison that is able to lock him up.
Education
Luangta is an intelligent child, diligent, patient and very responsible. It is reflected in his excellent school grade. He was ranked second in Primary 1 and when he was in Primary 2 and 3, he ranked first in both. When he finished Primary 3 which was the highest compulsory education level at that time, he did not continue education at any level.

Character​

Luangta’s character is honest and determined. Whatever he does, he does with great determination and sincerity. When he works, he does not want people to see or know. Even though he has been ordained as a monk, when he was practicing, he would not allow anybody to spot him easily, so when he was doing walking meditation he hid in the forest. At night, he waited for everybody to go back to the monks’ dwellings, before he started doing his walking meditation. His outstanding point is his immense patience. It could be inferred from his working style, that he will continue working until his work is completely done. If it was not too dark or it was time to eat, he would not quit his work until his siblings complained to his parents “If his parents do not go and work as well, our older brother will not stop working, and does not let us stop working as if we his siblings should have to work until we die”.

Reason for Ordainment​

When Luangta was old enough to ordain as a monk, his Father raised the subject of becoming a Monk while having dinner: I have many sons but none of them even thinks about ordination for the well being of his Father. I really want to see someone in the yellow robes before I pass away, because then I and can pass away peacefully and without any worries. Among all his children, the Father wasn't interested in any of them except Luangta. Luangta was the only one he really could depend on.
The Father praised Luangta that whatever Luangta does he can trust and depend on him – even he himself cannot achieche the level of skills of Luangta. Whenever his Father asked him to be ordained, he stayed quiet and did not reply, as if he did not have any ears and a mouth to speak. The Father told that if he passed away, there will be no one able to lift him out from the hell. His father said, that if he cannot depend on Luangta, there is no hope, for under all his sons, he can only depend on Luangta.
“After his Father said this, he broke instantly out in tears. When his Mother saw her husband crying she also started to cry. When Luangta saw this, he felt terrible and could not stand this. I instantly left the dinner table and fled into his room. This was the reason for him to become ordained ……………….....”

Entering the Monkhood​

He ordained as a monk at the Monastery of Yothanimit in the village of Ban Nongkonkwang, sub district of Nongbua , district of Udon Thanee, in the Province of Udon Thanee. He ordained on Tuesday 12^th May 1934, which falls on the 9^th Night of the Waxing Moon, 7^th Month, the Year of the Dog. His preceptor was Lord Abbot Prathammajedi (Jum Panutulo), Monastery of Pothisomporn, Muang District, district of Udon Thanee, in the Province of Udon Thanee. He received as his ordination name the name “Yannasampanno” which means “accomplished with insight”
As his personal character was a to be determined and sincere, he thought to himself, “that after being ordained, I will be ordained completely and stay within Dhamma Principle and the Discipline that no one will be able to criticize me. I will be earnest and serious until the day I leave the monkhood which is probably in about two years time. I will fulfill my duty as a monk as best as I can and if that means to study, I will do my best to accomplish my duty”.

Despite of Studying Buddhism, he did not forsake to practice meditation.​

Luangta asked his Teacher about the practice of meditation. “Dear teacher I would like to practice, can you tell me how I can do this?” He replied: “Hmm! Well, the practice of Buddho, I do the same sort of practice. Luangta practiced diligently. In the beginning, his mind would not calm down much. However, after practicing often and repeatedly, his mind started to calm down respectively until one day he saw the wonder of the citta (mind -heart).
“When I study the Dhamma, it makes me, since my training as a Novice in the Monks Teachings, which is the basic education background, wonder and it strikes me. After I have read the Buddha’s biography, I felt depressed, because I pitied our Lord Buddha when he faced hardship. He seems to torture himself for His Enlightenment until my tears were running continuously. When I have finished reading, I was so inpired by the Lord Buddhas perseverance. He was a Prince who abandoned a kingdom to become a monk. He became a so-called beggar. At that time, there was not any religion. In the sense terms such as to give to receive this kind of merit, to maintain the precepts will yield that kind of merit. This did not exist at that time. Siddhartha was impoverished and had to beg directly. For six years he trained is mind and body through his own abilities in every sort of way until he became enlightened to become the Lord Buddha.”
While Luangta was reading the Lord Buddha’s biography of his Enlightenment, he felt so amazed and wonderful until he brake out in tears. At the same time, when Luangta also read the biographies of the many Buddhist Arahants at the time of the Lord Buddha, who were from different family background, e.g. from royality, millionaires, well-to-do, traders, public as well as normal people, he told himself:
“...after anyone from any kind of family background has listened to the Buddha’s Teachings, they went into the forests to practice seriously. Then one by one succeeded to become an Arahant at that forest, or this mountain, that cave or that place. These were always quiet places. Faith arouse in him and mis mind startet to ponder about these matters and slowly the outside(worldly) matters disappeared…….”
“...In the beginning, I thought I would like to go to heaven and the Brahma worlds, but the more I read the biographies of His disciples, I did not want to go to these places anymore, instead I wanted to attain Nibbana. In the end, I desired only alone to attain Nibbana. I only want to become a Buddhist Arahant. That is my sole intention. Now my mind settled only on this one option. My original intention to become a monk for only 2 years dissipated slowly. On the contrary I became more and more pleased with being a monk. I got more and more absorbed into the Dhamma and this also changed my mind…………”
As a result of this, he left the village of Ban Tad later to study in different places. He swore to himself, that “When I have graduated the from the Buddhas Teaching level 3 , I will practice only, without any excuse or condition, because I want to be free from dukkha (dissatisfaction), I want to become an Arahant.”
Nevertheless, he was doubtful at that time “Is in this time and day, the attainment of Nibbana still possible, just like in the time of the Lord Buddha?” He kept this doubt deep in his heart burried, for he could not express this to anyone else. This is the reason why he wanted to meet Than Acharn Mun Buridattho. He had heard of his fame for a long time. Luangta felt deeply in his heart that Than Acharn Mun Buridattho will be able to resolve his doubt.
In 1941, Luangta graduated in from the School of Buddhist Scriptures in the monastery of Chedi Luang. It was his seventh year as a monk. He passed the Doctor of Teaching and Buddhist Teaching - level 3 – (there are 9 levels) that same year. He said that “While I am studying the Buddhist Scriptures for 7 years, I could not practice wholeheartedly. I could only be peaceful for a short periods of time. Only three times in these years was I able to go deep into meditation, my mind became extremely quiet, until everything around me, the world, my body disappeared from my awareness, the only thing left was “knowingness” (this state of meditation is also known as appana samadhi) …..”
After his graduation, Luangta thought about his oath he undertook in the beginning, so he traveled to Bangkok to bid goodbye to his senior monk, his Teacher. But his teacher was invited to a rural province, therefore, he went to pay his respects to the Supreme Monk Maha Weerawong (Tisso Uan), who was at that time the Abbot of the monastery of Baromnivat. So he went to pay respects and asked for permission. The Supreme Monk Maha Weerawong was glady giving Luangta the permission to leave.

Practicing seriously and
putting his life at the stake of Dhamma​

Luangta traveled to Nakorn Rachasrima Province and carried only the book of the monastic discipline (the 227 Rules for the monk) in his shoulderbag. He stayed for the rainsretreat at a monastery in the Jakkarat District. This is now the eighth year of his monkshood. He practiced diligently day and night since the first moment and throughout the rainsretreat.
“This time I will practice earnestly and to full measures so as to obtain good result, no matter if I will stay alive or die. I don’t hope for any other things except to be free from dukkha. This very life I will make it sure to transcend dukkha! I only ask that somebody will help me to explain if there is a way to Nibbana for real. Then I will give my whole life to that person and will devout body and mind to the essence of Dhamma. I will not ask for anything else than to put everything into my practice, no matter if I am going to die. If I die I want to die practicing the Dhamma, I don't want to die while retreating from my practice, or die with a deteriorated mind or a broken spirit .”
Luangta traveled from Nakorn Rachasrima Province and headed towards Udon Thanee Province. He intended to stay the rainsretreat with Than Acharn Mun at the the forest monastery of Nonniwet Temple. However, Luangta could not catch up with him, for Than Acharn Mun has been invited to go to the Sakon Nakorn Province. Therefore, Luangta went to stay at the monastery of Tungsawang in Nongkai Province. At the same time, there was a monk from the monastery of Ban Koknamon that told him: “Than Acharn Mun is very fierce, he is not only fiercely admonishing us, but if necessary he will kick us out as well.”
After Luangta heard this, he felt a conviction in his heart about the determination of Than Acharn Mun and thought to himself: “.. This Monk will become my Teaching Master. I must go and see for myself about how fierce he is. It is not possible that such a famous Teaching Master, who is well-known all over Thailand, scold us and chase us away without any reason....”

Meeting with Than Acharn Mun​

Luangta stayed at the monastery of Tungsawang for 3 months. In May 1942, his 9^th year of being a Monk, he traveled out of Nongkai to Sakon Nakorn and headed towards Than Acharn Mun, who stayed at the Bankok, Tongkob Sub-District, city-District of Sakon Nakorn, Sakon Nakorn Province.
Luangta asked the direction to the monastery from the villagers and walked along the path until he arrived there at the start of night. When he saw a pavilion, he became suspicious: “If this is a saala (meetinghall), then this is too small but if it is a monk’s dwelling, then this is too big.” Than Acharn Mun happened to be walking in meditation at the side of the saala. Luangta walked up to meet Than Acharn Mun on the meditation path. Than Acharn Mun then asked “Who has come?” Luangta replied: “Pom krab (It’s me.) ”. Than Acharn Mun scowled and replied immediately with wit “Even a bald head person has also pom (hair), not to say a person with hair….(pom in thai means hear and I)” When Luangta heard that, he knew he has made a mistake and therefore replied again “My name is Maha Bua” Than Acharn Mun replied: “Yes, just introduce yourself properly like that, so that people understand. When you only mentioned “pom” (I), everyone has pom(hair) on their head.”
Then Luangta had the opportunity to explain to Than Acharn Mun about his background and where he was coming from, where he stayed and asked for permission to stay with him. But within his heart he was a bit worried “I don’t want to hear that this place is full and cannot accept any more. I cannot take this, I will be heart broken…..” After a while, Than Acharn Mun said that “ Today, the Monk Nate happened to leave this temple and you Maha Bua came today, otherwise you could not have stayed, for a monk’s dwelling would not have been available.” Than Acharn Mun said this with a normal voice. Even though he already out of his compassion accepted Luangta to stay, nevertheless, Luangta could not help to fear that he would not be accepted to stay.

No more suspicion about Attainment of Nibbana​

Than Acharn Mun said, as if he could read Luangta’s thought, directly on the first night:
“.. . You have come to look for attainment of Nibbana. Where is nibbana? Soil is soil, water is water, wind is wind, fire is fire, weather is weather, and the elements they are made out of exists on themselves. These things are not path fruit and Nibbana and they are not the kilesas (defilements).”
“The real kilesas, and the real path fruit and Nibbana is in the heart. You should fix your awareness at your heart and then you will see the movement of Dhamma and kilesas in the heart. At the same time, you will also see the path fruit and Nibbana respectively..........”
Than Acharn Mun explained him about the attainment of Nibbana from the bottom of his true heart. Luangta then felt confident and believed that the attainment of Nibbana still exists. His former suspicion on this matter, that stayed in his heart, now totally disappeared..

Discontent because of a not concentrated Mind​

Luangta’s meditation began to deteriorate because he fixed his umbrella, that also serves as a small tent. “...
It is the condition of the mind, that cannot concentrate enough to make the citta stable enough, like he had experienced before. Sometimes he could concentrate enough to make the mind calm, sometimes not. His practiced deteriorated in a way, that he thought he is going to die real. Therefore he experienced heavy dukkha, for he has tasted the great value of deep concentration. However, his meditation has deteriorated and he felt restless all the time as if his heart was burning alight day and night, standing or walking, sitting or sleeping. This is really extreme dukkha , for he wanted to have that kind of samadhi (concentration) again, that he had experienced before.”
However, Luangta put up his resoluteness and determination to fight the kilesas. He always says that “If the kilesas do not die, I will die. They cannot stay together, kilesas and me! This is unacceptable.” He has received a trick from Than Acharn Mun: Don't think that your mind deterioated, just think Buddho. Replace every thought about it repeatedly with Buddho.. After repeating Buddho continuously, the concentration will come on its own. If the mind concentrates and you loose Buddho, then it will deterioate, for the mind has nothing to concentrate on. Concentrate on the “Buddho” and your mind becomes stable again.”
The 9^th year of his monkhood is the first year that Luangta stayed during the rainsretreat with Than Acharn Mun at Ban Kok, Sakon Nakorn Province. He promised himself that “……….I must use the meditation word “Buddho” to control my citta all the time regardless whether I am meditating or not or wherever I am. Even though I am sweeping the monastery grounds or do other daily activities, I will not let my mind slip out of the “Buddho”….” Because of Luangta’s determination, his citta came to peace and did not deteriorate again!

Practicing diligently and meditating all Night long​

The 10^th year of his monkhood he spend at Ban Namon, Sakon Nakorn Province. This is the second year that Luangta stayed with Than Acharn Mun. During that year, he practiced more diligently and with all his might, than before both concerning the mind and body. He did not sleep at all during daytime except for the days he sat meditating through the night (6p.m. til 6.a.m.). Then he would take a rest during the day. Otherwise when he practiced normally he would not rest at all during the day. On the night that he meditated through the night, he would not change his sitting position nor move his legs. The dukkha tormentation, that he experienced because of this he would explain as follows:
“...as if the whole buttock was swollen up, my bones felt like broken every piece and at every joint and even the wrist felt like it was in two pieces. Feelings of dukkha and very painful feelings when they occurred, then everywhere, at each location at each point within the body …...”
His diligence in meditation through the night for nine or ten nights like this let his buttock swell up and the skin burst and stained the robe. But because of this sitting through the night and sitting through painful feelings he did experience the wonder of the citta. Therefore and because he was able to investigate thoroughly through painful feelings, through the the nature of body and the mind, he was able to experience the heartfelt Dhamma.

Addiction to Samadhi for Five Years​

During that period, his meditation was very solid and stable. He could determine to sit in samadhi(concentration) for as many hours as he liked and on top of it experienced a high intensity of happiness. He did not want to leave samadhi and be disturbed with anything whatsoever and was just satisfied to be able to firmly concentrate in onepointedness, in other words, just knowingness. Finally, he thought that this outstanding knowingness is nothing else than Nibbana. He got addicted to this kind of happiness arising from samadhi for 5 full years. Finally Than Acharn Mun had to use a trick to lure him out, by saying “Would you like to lie down and die like this? Do you know that the happiness in samadhi is like meat that gets stuck between your teeth?. Do you know the samadhi of the Lord Buddha? Samadhi must know it is samadhi and investigation must know it is investigation. You just take samadhi and think this is Nibbana. You are really crazy about samadhi. Samadhi, that looks like you are liying there dead, do you think that is Right samadhi?”

Enjoying Investigation​

Through the power of the Dhamma scolding of Than Acharn Mun, Luangta came out of his samadhi. Once out he learned to practice investigation very fast. His mind turned around day and night and he did not sleep. And he even critizied his samadhi: “you just sleep and don't get anything from it!” Actually, practicing samadhi, when it is done properly, this is the way how to rest the mind and it is like a whetstone that sharpens the knife of wisdom. Hoiwever, when he turned to investigation he did not rest the mind, so Than Acharn Mun reprimanded him again and said “Now you are crazy of thoughts and you fall for them! You use too much thinking, falling from one extreme into the other. Then of course thoughts into worldly things. If you would use your thoughts of investigation appropriately, then this would be the way how to kill the kilesas!”

Investigation to overcome Sexual Desire​

Luangta uses the contemplation of asubha (loathsomeness) of the body. He trains him to see people as a bag of bones wrapped in by skin. There is only red meat and skin. Because of this sexual desire did not appear in him. The sexual (sensual) desire slowly disappeared without letting him know the time and place of disappearance. There was something wrong here he thought, so he switched during walking meditation to see the beauty in things and sticked to beautify things. He took this kind of practice and practiced it for four full days. After the fourth day of this practice around 9.00 -10.00 pm,, suddenly something arose in his heart. He felt a bit restless as if he was still attached to beauty. Then he told himself, sensual desire is not yet over. Then he chose to do the practice asubha in front of his eyes. He concentrated down on this image and looked if it was stable or if it was moving here and there. He put all his attention on it, until he could discern that asubha itself came from his own mind. No matter if it is beautiful or loathsome, the citta is the one who decides on it and falls for its own decision perceiving it as beautiful or ugly! Once he had this insight the citta let instantly go of the external beauty and loathsomeness. It was gone now for good! And that is the way it should happen!

Great Awareness, Great Wisdom​

Once the mind (had finished the investigation of the mind Groups) and was completely empty, knowledge arouse completely about the nature of the five groups: body, feeling, memory, thought and consciousness. It knew about everything already, there is nothing more to know about this. And the only thing left was this knowingness. There was something about this Knowingness, that sucks us in and make us drink it. Whatever has arisen in the citta, the moment it arose, it instantly fell away. At the time of the Lord Buddha this was called Great awareness and Great wisdom, but today we could call it automatic awareness and wisdom. This would be a proper description for the citta is very bright and outstanding. Luangta then went to see Than Acharn Mun and related this experience to him. Than Acharn Mun said loudly and pronounced : “Yes, that’ s right. Now you are experienced You have come to the right path and criteria. I myself achieved this stage at Sarika Cave, just the same as Maha (Bua). That is the correct way.”

Destroying Ignorance and getting rid of the Cycle of Rebirth​

This is his 16^th year of monkhood. It is the 9^th year of practice and he is at the monastery of Doi Dhammmachedi. On Monday 15^th May 1950 which is the 14^th night of waning moon, 6^th month at exactly 11.00 pm Luangta successfully cleared the problem between the kilesas and Dhamma in his heart. Luangta compassionately said about his mind at that point:
When Awareness and Wisdom focused in on this kind of citta a strange knowledge arose in his heart: “Whether it is sorrow, brightness, happiness, suffering - all these are only worldly things and are not permanent” At this point awarness and wisdom knew that while the citta is hold in custody by ignorance, and all these things are impermanent, one should let go of this. One should not cling to this. After this knowledge arose and warned awareness and wisdom, the things responsible for investigation, it just took a second to realizeit so that the citta and sati panna could completely come to a halt in equanimity. They all stood dead still, nothing moved. The citta had no focus of attention and was just as still, wisdom was not working and awareness was just aware, not focused on anything. The citta, wisdom and awareness, are completely at peace. At this point the worldy elelements within the citta, with avijja as its sole disturber, exploded, broke apart and left from the heart. What remained was the liberated citta.

First Practice yourself, then Train Others
This is following the Example of the Lord Buddha​

Luangta Pra Maha Bua Yannasampanno is considered as an important figure in Buddhism who has greatly contributed to the Thai nation. His Practice and behavior is adorable and serves as a good example for the next generation to follow his footsteps. He practiced himself by achieving the highest level of Dhamma in Buddhism. His work has been finished. He is also compassionate towards his friends and relatives to the highest levels. Through his Dhamma instrauctions for the monks and novices and his mother. He trained his mother until she reached the noble land.
He Engaged in good deeds for the world. His compassion has spread widely such as donations to hospitals, government departments, schools, the Poor, victims of disasters, support Buddhism, establish a Dhamma radio network for the public. Most importantly, Luangta gave Dhamma Talks with the objective of how to attain Nibbana. This is the Riches of Dhamma of endless value that he gave to everyone of us.
Even at the last moment before passing to attain Parinibbana, Luangta’s compassion still shines and covers the whole of Thailand. For Luangta has said that “My corpse will be burned by firewood. The money (that is given) must be used to buy gold and put as national reserve in the Central Treasury” Have you ever heard anybody saying such things? You wont have heard such words ever before. However, Luangta despite of his old age, said this with openly and with firm conviction!
Luangta is a very senior monk who has made great contributions to his country. He has many disciples who highly respect him. Luangta is also a father (in Dhamma) to “Her youngest Royal Highness” Princess Chulaporn Valailuck. Therefore, at the worldly level how great the things might be, he can manage to accomplish these great things.
However, what now appears before our very eyes is the simple funeral pyre, but elegant and dignified. The sarcophagus where Luangta’s remaining body lays will remain as a beautiful picture in the memory of every disciple and draws attention to everyone who has seen it.
Luangta has used his body to make the hearts of the whole Thai nation to one single heart and thus become the sacred gold which is kept at the National Treasury. The gold shines in bright yellow rays. This is the last piece of gift: “The Golden heart” that he gives to his Thai brothers and sisters and help to protect the “National Treasury” to stay with the Thai nation forever.
Now, Luangta has passed away and entered Parinibbana, gone from all of us and will not return again. We have come here to send Luangta until the last point on the border, which is the borderline between the World and Freedom. Let us recall about some of Luangta’s words:

“When I’m living this life, I will do good deeds for the world as an example and have compassion for the world, because after this...when I die... will I not return to this world, nor will I be born in this world ever again”​

This is such a courageous thing to say, just like that Roar of the lion king with great powers. This old aged monk has proclaimed Buddhism with great power and compassion towards all living things. This is like raining water from the sky to a dried out earth, so that the soil will become cool and moist.
Luangta is also Parents, Master and Teacher to every disciple. Luangta has been a huge and comforting shelter for all the disciples for a long time. It is difficult for us not to be saddened by his sudden passing away from us. We cannot stop our tears. We, his disciples, would like to pay respect and follow Luangta by trying our best to attain to Nibbana as well. Luangta who is like our Parents, Master and Teacher has passed away. His legacy of contribution remains in the hearts of the Nation. His great Dhamma has shone brightly in this world and the world has acknowledged him: Luangta Pra Maha Bua Yannasampanno, the great figure, the virtuous monk who has made great contributions to this world. Luangta Pra Maha Bua Yannasampanno he just cannot be compared to anyone else …………….
